What is Pathways Academy?

UAMS Pathways Academy is a statewide K-12 STEM-H educational and community engagement program with the ultimate goal of increasing the health care workforce in the state of Arkansas. Our program is under the UAMS Division for Academic Pathways and Workforce Partnerships, where our goal is to improve the health, health care and well-being of all Arkansans. Greetings from the UAMS Pathways Academy Team

We would like to introduce Pathways Academy to all interested in pressing toward a groundbreaking statewide opportunity to experience a multidisciplinary approach in teaching and learning Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Health Science. It is our resolve that Pathways Academy provide our scholars with experiences that encourage and catapult them into careers where passion and purpose prevail. Pathways Academy teachers are licensed, experienced and intentional professionals who prepare our scholars with hands-on, real-world and interactive experiences that leads to dynamic professionals!

Must be enrolled in grades K to 12 in an Arkansas school

UAMS Pathways Program Information

Junior STEM Academy

Focuses on STEM-H while using a combination of effective teaching pedagogies
Utilizes culturally responsive and holistic curriculum
Integrates concepts relating to mental health/wellness such as cyberbullying or emotional intelligence

Senior STEM Academy

Focuses on STEM-H while using a combination of effective teaching pedagogies
Provides 6th to 8th grade scholars a deeper awareness of STEM-H careers
Argumentative inquiry labs
Community-based participatory research and project-based learning

RAMP-UP Academy

Facilitates a successful academic pathway for scholars who have strong interests in health care professions
Ensures a smooth transition from secondary education to collegiate and career readiness
Provides scholars the opportunity for growth and development in Medical Professions/STEM careers by utilizing hands-on experiences
Engages in research practices community science and engineering activities ACT preparation

Student Athlete STEM Academy

Facilitates collaborative efforts of medical professions and athletic scholars
Allows scholars with a strong interest in health care professions and athletics to pursue both interests
Provides athletic scholars the opportunity to grow and develop while pursuing Medical Profession/STEM careers

Pathways Academy Expectations and Goals

Enhance educational opportunities for underrepresented and low-income students.
Close the education achievement gap for program participants.
Improve critical thinking skills and creativity.
Intensify exposure to cutting-edge, biomedical, public health research, translational research.
Provide preparation for successful application to and matriculation in schools emphasizing careers in the health professions.
Provide mentorship and coaching to guide students in their career path and life journey.

Pathways Academy Curriculum

Utilizing a theme-based curriculum allows our scholars to experience a variety of real-life topics, which makes learning fun and challenging. Research suggests that learning is a process of integration. When scholars see how facts and ideas connect with other subjects, it adds meaning to the curriculum. This not only helps students understand what and why they are learning, but it also attaches ideas and skills to specific contexts.
